Frequently asked questions on Rothamsted International Fellowships
How do I apply for a Fellowship?
The applicant is expected to have had detailed discussions with a project leader at Rothamsted Research to determine the nature of the project before the application is submitted. Projects can be in any of the subject areas covered by Rothamsted Research.
What qualifications must an applicant have?
Applicants must be "mid-career" post-doctoral scientists. Candidates without higher degrees but with equivalent research experience will also be considered.
What are the selection criteria for an application?
See Selection Criteria documents.
What is the deadline for an application?
Applications must be received by the deadline given on the website ('Applying' page). A selection panel meets, and decisions will be relayed to applicants, within a month of the meeting.
Can I still apply if I miss the deadline?
Yes, but the application will not be considered until the next round.
Can Rothamsted International help to find me a suitable project leader?
Yes, we will try to do so, providing we have a clear understanding of your previous and current research. However, we can not guarantee being successful.
Do I need to take an English language proficiency test?
There is no special requirement, but you need to have a working knowledge of spoken and written English.
Will the Fellowship allow me to do field work in my home country?
Projects will be undertaken only at Rothamsted Research in the UK. Field studies in your home country can be done and linked to your project but Rothamsted International cannot cover the costs involved.
Can it help pay for my first degree or diploma, Master's thesis or PhD?
No, RI Fellowships are normally awarded to post-doctoral scientists.
Do I need a visa for the Fellowship?
Visa and Passport requirements must be handled by the applicant and his/her institute. We will provide supporting documentation if needed. These details must be faxed to our office before travel arrangements can be finalised and any tickets can be issued.
What if I need visa and permits to visit other countries during my Fellowship?
Rothamsted International will assist you where we think it is reasonable to do so and related to your project, but any private arrangements you wish to make are your own responsibility. We are not liable for any losses you may incur because you could not obtain appropriate Visa authorisation.
Can I extend my visit at Rothamsted after the Fellowship?
No, all Fellows are required to return to their home country at the end of the Fellowship period. This is a strict requirement.
What does the Fellowship cover financially?
Travel, accommodation and a personal allowance are provided along with costs for laboratory consumables during the stay at Rothamsted.
Fellows are not employees of Rothamsted Research or Rothamsted International, and a Fellowship award is not an offer of employment.
Where will I stay?
Accommodation in single rooms within shared apartments or flats is provided. Fellows are responsible for preparing their own meals and arranging domestic details with other scientists in their apartment.
Can I bring my family?
No, the type of accommodation available and the high cost of living at Rothamsted will not allow families to be together during the Fellowship.
How will the Fellowship be monitored?
You will have regular discussions with your Project leader and also give brief summaries of the research to Rothamsted International staff during your stay.
What do I need to do before I leave at the end of my Fellowship?
A final report and poster on your project must be given to Rothamsted International. On completing a Fellowship, scientists are required to return to their home country.
Who will help me if I have problems?
Any of the staff at Rothamsted International will help where possible, if you have difficulties with your work, personal problems, or need assistance with bank accounts and registration with the local Police authorities.
