Nompumelelo's career has enjoyed success since completing her Fellowship and returning to South Africa - she has become Cowpea Project Manager with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF). She says her aim is to contribute to the development and enhancement of subsistence cowpea farmers in Africa.

Her research characterised gene-derived molecular markers that help to understand the molecular mechanisms of drought tolerance in cowpea. Cowpea is one of the most important legume crops in the semi-arid tropics. She hopes to exploit her findings in commercial breeding programmes.
